Lord of the Rings - The Fellowship of the Ring

Arwen: Do you remember when we first met? Aragorn: I thought I had wandered into a dream. Arwen: Long years have passed. You did not have the cares you carry now. Do you remember what I told you? Aragorn: You said you'd bind yourself to me, forsaking the immortal life of your people. Arwen: And to that I hold. I would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone. [hands him her pendant] Arwen: I choose a mortal life. Aragorn: You cannot give me this. Arwen: It is mine to give to whom I will. Like my heart.

~dialogue from Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (PG-13)

Probably the most romantic story in the Lord of the Rings series is the one between Arwen and Aragorn. Their relationship finally comes together in the last film in the series, but one of the first glimpses we have of them is the above mentioned dialog. Arwen offers her heart to Aragorn... Aragorn tries to stop her, but she reminds him that her heart is hers to give to whom she wishes. Let's take a moment to explore this thought in relation to the conversation...

In any relationship a person's heart is involved and the depth of that relationship can be determined by the willingness their heart is offered to the other. If we take the time to step back and get the larger view of our relationships, we would find this statement to be true. We can survey our friendships and find that the amount we offer our heart and our true selves is directly related to the depth of that relationship. The same goes in marriage. The more we offer our heart to our spouse the greater the possibility for depth in the relationship.

Trust is the key ingredient in the decision of offering your heart to another person. It's very hard to offer your heart to someone that you don't trust... in fact, it's nearly impossible. When it comes to matters of the heart, trust plays the largest role. When you have a relationship where trust is strong, it's easier to offer your heart and in this situation deep, strong relationships are possible.

The same things apply to our relationship with God. If we trust Him, it's easier to offer our hearts to Him... in turn, develop a deep relationship. God has proven Himself worthy of trust by His faithfulness through the generations:(a) His love endures all things, forever. (b) It is because of this everlasting love and His great faithfulness that He has earned the highest trust. (c) God is worthy of our trust and He waits for us to offer our hearts to Him. (d) He has done His part, now it's our turn... the choice is ours.(e)

Long years have passed; perhaps today should be the day you give your heart to the Lord. Start building the deep relationship that you need.
